Like many hospitals, there was insufficient parking to meet staff and patient demand, with results of an online public consultation demonstrating that over 95% of respondents considered that additional parking was required.
We supported the Trust with transport planning inputs to the hybrid planning application for a new multi-storey car park (MSCP) and private cancer centre on land at Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford.
The MSCP wasn’t just about adding spaces—it introduced 60 EV charging bays (30 active, 30 passive) where previously there were none. This freed up the main hospital site for more visitor and outpatient parking. Outline permission was sought for the cancer centre, a specialist care and diagnostic centre for day treatment. Additionally, a car park management plan was provided for the temporary car parking to be used during the construction period. The MSCP opened in 2023 and the cancer centre in 2024.
Our involvement did not end with the planning applications. We developed a comprehensive Travel Plan for the entire hospital site, coordinated travel surveys in 2023 and 2025 and produced associated travel monitoring reports. Today, we are working on design appraisals to make car parks and public spaces safer, better laid out and more welcoming.
Gaining a sufficiently high response rate to the Travel Plan surveys has been difficult, with a target of 30% and employee numbers of around 4,500.
We worked hard with the Trust to ensure the survey was marketed widely, with posters provided to advertise the survey, regular marketing materials from the Trust, a site visit to survey staff face-to-face and prizes for participation, all of which have encouraged completion and a higher response rate was achieved in 2025.
