Granting of planning permission for the new Sainsbury’s store in Matlock was on condition that Sainsbury’s team up with Derbyshire County Council and Matlock Borough Council to provide a much needed refresh of the highways in the centre of this historic Derbyshire town.
The Local Authority was in receipt of a Government grant to fund the cost of materials and labour, with Sainsbury’s providing the Design Team to plan, design and deliver the project. Mayer Brown were brought on board as Designer due to our good relationship with Sainsbury’s and our previous successful delivery of a large number of highways schemes on their behalf.
Liaising with both the County and Borough Councils, Matlock resident groups and a number of suppliers of high quality materials, Mayer Brown developed a scheme to refresh the existing patchwork tarmac and rusted metal guard railing. The scheme had to satisfy the requirements of all parties, in particular the residents groups who had strong opinions on what should be delivered in their town.
The challenge being to ensure residents were satisfied with the finished product, whilst also ensuring the scheme confirmed to highway design and safety standards and, importantly, staying within the Authorities’ budget.
Upon successfully agreeing a scheme which met all the required criteria, we assisted with legal agreements, tendering of the works, traffic regulation orders, Statutory Undertaker’s diversions and ultimately, oversaw the construction on-site until the Local Authority were happy to sign-off and take ownership of the highway.
