Mayer Brown was appointed by Transport for London to undertake Road Safety Audits on the LCN+ schemes, covering a total of 16 London Boroughs over the south-east , south-west and north-west sector.

Project

Mayer Brown delivered approximately 40 Road Safety Audit reports on LCN+ Cycle Route + for the London Boroughs, this included Stage 1, 2, 1/2 and 3 Road Safety Audits.

Challenge

An example of some of the projects audited are given below:

Crouch End Broadway, London Borough of Haringey

  • Detailed design pedestrian and cycle priority measures, improving the shopping centre for buses and the general traffic.
  • New town centre urban environment reducing the carriageway width and relocation congestion.
  • Amendments to the method of signal control for cyclists and supplementary road space allocation.

Coniston Road, London Borough of Croydon

  • Junction improvements, providing safer crossing facilities for pedestrians, reducing vehicle speeds and providing a safer environment for cyclists.
  • Streetscape improvements, including build outs, kerb realignment and the addition of landscaping.
  • Contrasting surfacing materials.

Wandle Road / Bishopsford Road, London Borough of Merton

  • Relocation of busy stop to facilitate the proposed amendments to the junction layout.
  • Junction improvements, providing safer crossing facilities for pedestrians, reducing vehicle speeds and providing a safer environment for cyclists.
  • Streetscape improvements, including build outs, kerb realignment and the addition of planters.

Solution

This work included analysis of engineering drawings, interpretation of accident reports, site inspections and the preparation of ‘draft’ and ‘final’ Audit reports. Also included with the above were the liaison with council officials, TfL officials and the Metropolitan Police as appropriate.
