The Isle of Wight Council was allocated more than £13.6 million pounds by the government in 2023 to boost green travel. This major investment will be used to enhance travel between Ryde and Yarmouth by improving cycling, walking and bus routes while also making accessibility improvements.

Part of this funding will be spent on the West Wight Greenway, stretching for 13 miles between Freshwater and Newport, following the dismantled railway line and making use of the existing rights of way network where possible.

As part of this project, our Isle of Wight team were asked to undertake feasibility studies on the western part of the greenway. Ken Fry went out on his bike (an electrified Brompton) looking at suggested alternative routes and advising on lightly-trafficked sections of road where off-road options are either less direct or not achievable.
